My hand is itching like crazy right now. Why? Because on Monday, my big old lovable dog Billy bit the heck out of my hand. No, he'd never bitten me before. Yes, I'm fine, healing quickly (duh), but trust me, I was a mess. It was totally my fault. You see, he's not doing very well, but I didn't want to think about how badly he was feeling so when I tried to help him, I hurt him instead. It's been a real wake up call and I'm clear that a lot of the pain I was feeling was because I have to face the imminent loss of my beautiful boy Bill. I'm telling you all of this for a reason - when we pretend that something is one way when it's really another way - bad things happen. I'm talking about what happened in Charlottesville. It was one heck of a dog bite on so many levels. We can't pretend that we have eradicated Racism. We can't pretend that there is no such thing as White Privilege. We can't pretend that what just happened doesn't include us. If we continue pretending that everything is fine, things are going to get worse, and I think it's more important for us to be uncomfortable creating change than comfortable pretending all is well. What to do? What to do? What to do? At Urgent Care, the first thing they did was deep clean the wounds - horribly painful, but necessary. i think we have to be more honest about the role we play, to listen and listen and listen, and learn, then check back inside again. Have the hard conversations so we can be part of the solution. No more pretending that everything is fine. Let's raise consciousness by being love, giving love, speaking with love and acting with love and curiosity, and let's do it every day. EVERY STINKIN' DAY.
Let's tell the truth. Let's live the truth. Let's co-create balance and equality in our lifetime.
